What do you do with a broken dream when it all falls flat?
From a young age, I was told to dream and so I wrote down all things I
wanted to accomplish in life. Move out of my parent’s house by 18, get married
by 21, raise kids, and travel the world with my family. 10 years into this great
dream and suddenly, as a rug pulled out from under me. Within a month I lost
everything before I could sit and process. The messenger of bad news came from each
side. It was a Job season. Many nights with tears, I pleaded with the Lord “Please
take me away from here!” I questioned my existence, I questioned everything and
everyone. Why is life so cruel to me? What have I done to deserve this pain?
But through my struggles, I have come to
understand that life is not always easy or fair. Sometimes bad things happen to
good people, and we are left to pick up the pieces. It can be hard to hear
clichés like "everything happens for a reason" when you're in the
thick of pain.
Everyone will be shaken;
every good thing will come under attack. To some, it is the death of a child,
to some, it is a broken relationship or a failed business, and to others, it
might be a life-threatening disease. I don’t mean to scare you, but if you have
lived long enough, you know what I write is true. Sometimes life throws curve
balls, it’s just how it is.
How not to break
The saying goes “You are either in a storm, coming out of a storm, or
getting into one.” It is important to remember that you
are not alone in your struggles. Every person, regardless of their background
or beliefs, will experience tough times. But there is a way to build yourself
up to withstand the storms of life. You can build your foundation on sand,
which is fast, easy, and enjoyable, but when the storms come, you will fall. Or
you can build our foundation on Christ the solid rock. It takes time, effort,
confession, and self-denial, but when the storms come, you will stand strong.
As a child of God, during the dark days of your life, it might seem as
though God is far away and has forgotten about you but hear this. He never
leaves nor forsakes his children. He is with you through it all. On this side
of heaven we only see a glimpse, so lean not on your own understanding, in all
your ways, in all your pain, acknowledge Him and He will make your path
straight. He will rescue you from every trap, He will protect you from deadly
disease, and He will comfort your heart. He is a faithful God, a faithful God
indeed.
When your dreams fall flat, dream again.
